Exporting Google Scholar Results into RefWorks

Page history last edited by Eric Hartnett 15 years, 6 months ago

Google Scholar allows you to search various resources for scholarly literature. Google Scholar works with RefWorks along with other bibliographic management tools so that you can export Google Scholar search results directly into your RefWorks account.  Setting up this capability requires only a few quick steps:

1) On the Google Scholar main webpage there is a "Scholar Preferences" link on the right side of the search box.  Click on this link.

2) The Google Scholar Preferences pages allows you to set a number of options that control the way Google Scholar works when you search.

3) At the bottom of the Preferences page is a "Bibliography Manager" section which allows you to select the type of bibliography manager to which you would like to export results.

4) Select "Show links to import citations into" and choose "RefWorks" from the drop-down menu.

4) Anytime you make changes to Google Scholar preferences, you must save the changes.  A "Save Preferences" button is located on the right side of the screen at both the top and bottom of the Preferences page.

Now that you have modified your preferences, whenever you perform a search in Google Scholar, you should now see an "Import into RefWorks" link beneath each search result.

Click on the "Import into RefWorks" link to add the reference to your Refworks account.  If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to do so before the reference is added to your account.

If you already logged into your RefWorks account, the reference will be added directly into your account.

When you add a reference from Google Scholar into your RefWorks account you are taken to the Edit Reference page.  Please keep in mind that the references imported from Google Scholar are only as good as the information that is provided by the search result.  It is a good idea to double-check any reference pulled from Google Scholar so that you can add any missing information.
